History

The International Microwave Power Institute (IMPI) was founded in 1966 to serve the information needs of specialists working with dielectric (microwave and RF) heating systems. In 1977, the Institute reorganized to expand its industrial and scientific base to meet the information needs evolving in consumer microwave ovens and related products.

IMPI's special interests include scientists, researchers, lab technicians, product developers, marketing managers and a variety of other professionals interested in the industrial, scientific, medical, instrumentation, food science, and other applications of microwave/RF technology. From these broad interest areas come the focus of the Institute's educational, information, and service programs for its members.

IMPI's interdisciplinary approach to issues, education, programming, problem solving and membership is its key strength. By combining science and engineering with practical development and marketing, the Institute encourages technical advancement both in the laboratory and in the field.

The Institute provides support to its members through three basic vehicles including meetings and seminars, technical and information publications, and special service assistance programs.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the International Microwave Power Institute is to be the global organization that provides a forum for the exchange of information on all aspects of microwave and RF heating technologies

Goal #1: Promote and document research on microwave and RF applications technology.

Objectives:
Catalogue available literature through literature database.
Identify all existing university research projects world wide.
Make literature resources available on Web site.
Create economic models for various applications.
Define viable research topics.

Goal #2: Educate industry on ALL existing and potential microwave and RF technology uses.

Objectives:
Inventory all Mw and RF applications and estimate impact on manufacturing and GNP.

Goal #3: Establish an international information collection system.

Objectives:
Conduct user industry market research via coalitions with industry associations.
Establish corresponding information contacts in every country or continent.
Create a database of successful and unsuccessful applications.
Create Mw/RF component literature database.

Goal #4: Promote the Institute as the source for microwave information.

Objectives:
Market literature database to user industry associations.
Sponsor courses & workshops at allied shows (IFT, SemiCon, ACS, etc.)
Conduct educational symposia and workshops.

Goal #5: Provide recognition for significant achievement.

Objectives:
Award "Best Paper" recognition for JMPEE and MwW.
Create the "Percy Spencer" award for innovative dielectric research.
Award IMPI "Fellow" recognition for career contributions to Mw/RF industry.
Provide cash award for best symposium poster.

Goal #6: Encourage individuals, organizations, and firms to become members of the Institute.
